FAQs About How To Design A Bedroom
Where do I start?
Figuring out where to start when choosing to redesign your bedroom is a place where many people get stuck in. However, the solution is simple and apparent- you are already over thinking if you are asking this question.
Pick one thing! Whether this one thing is- a comforter, decorative pillow, unique piece of art, or gorgeous drapes, choose it as your favorite thing and use that to inspire your entire bedroom.
Stemming from your “one thing”, you should then move to large furniture pieces as those are typically your biggest investment. Then choose your coordinating pillows and fabrics, move on to your paint color or wallpaper, accessorize, and voila! You have a brand new bedroom!
What style of bed should I choose?
The design of your bed should fit the genre of décor you plan to use throughout your entire room.
Four poster bed: This is a good choice for rooms with high ceilings
Hollywood bed: This is a low bed, usually without a headboard. This is for a sleek and contemporary design with the desire for a bed that does not take up much space.
Platform bed: This is a mattress on a stage-like box that adds a streamlined sense of drama to the room.
Sleigh bed: These beds are usually very high, with curved headboards and footboards. These are for large bedrooms as they usually are very heavy in appearance.
Tester bed: This is a draped four-poster bed. This style of bed was originally designed for comfort and warmth as well as a romantic sense of privacy; however contemporary design as modified the idea of “canopy” and has moved away from the use of cloth for this sort of bed style.
How much money do I need to invest in this project?
There are plenty of ways to redecorate your bedroom on a budget. You can do simple things such as buying a new comforter or changing the drawer handles on your furniture pieces to make them feel new.
You can simply clean up the clutter and rearrange your signature pieces within your bedroom or add a chair and a lamp to the corner to create a reading nook. Lay down a rug! Redecorating your bedroom does not have to break the bank.
Headboard or no headboard?
Traditionally, headboards were designed as an extra form of insulation between the wall and the bed to keep heads from getting cold at night.
Nowadays, headboards are meant to be aesthetically pleasing and add style to a room. However, unless your bed can be completely flush with a wall, headboards also prevent pillows from falling on a floor. And who wants to deal with that?
Curtains or blinds?
Curtains and blinds are large contributors to the overall make-up of a bedroom as they contribute to the atmosphere, softness, depth of a color, and even the energy efficiency of a home.
Curtains are best suited for a bedroom, but blinds are becoming increasingly popular. For smaller bedrooms, you can add height to a room with Roman blinds a few inches below the ceiling. This creates an effect that the ceiling is taller, the room is brighter, and the windows are huge.
Curtains can soften a room and add a more romantic vibe.
Can I utilize the ceiling?
Yes! The ceiling is a fifth wall! When you lie in bed, don’t you study the ceiling? You can utilize a pattern or gentle color. Other options are to use a stencil or even wallpaper.
A canopy bed with drapes that hang from the ceiling can provide a romantic ambiance while adding color and layers of texture to a ceiling.
Is there such a thing as too many pillows?
Nope. Well, yes if you go absolutely nuts, but pillows are a fun way to accessorize and add texture to a bed. You can combine organic prints with geometric prints or use contrasting colors. Pulling in various patterns and sizes can greatly contribute to a layered look.
What should I do for lighting?
Lighting can also help contribute to a layered look. Ambient lighting can be used to light a whole room, small lamps can focus light for reading and other activities, and accent lighting can illuminate the walls softly.
Every light that you install can easily be upgraded with a dimmer. A dimmer is a great way to make a room feel more romantic or to cue your brain to start settling down for bedtime.
Budget- Before you do ANYTHING in regards to redecorating your bedroom, you should plan out how much time and money you would like to invest in the project.
Ambiance- Make your bedroom a getaway from the hectic pace of life. If you have the space, try to keep your cell phone, computer, television, and work out of the bedroom. Make this a room solely dedicated to reading, sleeping, and romance.
Reading nook- Include a private nook that gives you a place to sit and read. Creating an intimate lounging area with a comfortable chair and lamp can add to the depth of a room. If you have a window seat, take advantage of the view and the natural light.
Declutter- The bedroom isn’t a place for clutter. In order to add to the relaxing sense of a bedroom, you should try to keep your things out of sight.
This can be accomplished through a bedside table with deep drawers or a skirted table, you can use a storage bench or trunk at the foot of your bed, some headboards come with shelves built-in or secret sliding panels, or you can even place boxes beneath your bed and keep them hidden with a bed skirt.
Sizing- Choose the right size furniture for your bedroom. You should map out a floor plan and take proper measurements.
If your bedroom is small, don’t choose large furniture to overflow your room. In the same consideration, if your bedroom is large, you can add a chair or ottoman to the foot of the bed, so your furniture will not look lost in a big room.
Simplicity- Regardless of your decorating style, a bedroom should feel cozy, simple, sophisticated, and elegant. Make sure there is at least two or three feet of space between the large pieces of furniture.
Try to go for accent pieces in wall décor and accessories rather than an abundance of small pieces.
Color hue- Choose a soothing color to create a restful ambiance. You can use wallpaper, stencils, or an accent color on one wall, but don’t go bold throughout an entire room. This can make a room feel calm and serene.
Lighting- Fairy or string lights on the walls can add to the light layers and create a mystical element to the room.
Accent lighting- Candles are another great way to add a soft light to your room. You can choose scented or unscented, but try to choose a soothing scent such as lavender rather than something bold like cinnamon or cloves.
Fabric- For an adult bedroom, it can be easier to start by choosing your fabrics and then choosing a matching paint rather than vice versa.
Accent wall- Having an accent wall is a great way to spice up a room and you don’t need to be an artist to do it!
You can do anything from adding a bold color to hanging a patterned rug to adding a wall mural to hanging a mirror, or to hanging a serious of wall art horizontally.
Just remember to keep the “pop” on one wall, rather than dispersed throughout the entire room. This can be make the room feel overcrowded and cluttered.
Au natural- Add whatever natural elements you can to your bedroom. Try to incorporate the opportunity for natural light to come into the room and add plants to your space to experience true zen. Even fake flowers can make a room more peaceful.
Mirrors- If your bedroom is small, adding mirrors can expand the room by creating the illusion that the room is much bigger than it is and can add extra glam. A body length mirror can even be leaned against the wall instead of hung to make an impression of greater space.
Shelving- Floating shelves are a great way to save space and furniture- these shelves can be used to replace a nightstand, a bookcase, or a laptop desk.
Personalize- Don’t be afraid to add personality to your bedroom! This room should feel like home to you. You can add initials or cherished collections to the décor.
Photographs- Family photographs are a great way to personalize a place; however, the bedroom is the one room where these sorts of photographs are not recommended. Who wants to fall asleep with Grandpa Joe staring at you?
Fireplace- If you are remodeling, consider installing a gas-fueled fireplace so you can enjoy the flickering flames as you doze under the sheets or read in your comfy nook.
Area rug- Adding an area rug, even if the room is already carpeted, is a great way to add texture and layers to the bedroom.
