The Waffle Maker

Sure, you can cook waffle batter in any iron, but if you want your waffles to truly be like a waffle from Waffle House, you need a classic American style waffle maker. These are the thinner waffles that are crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside, and have plenty of wells to hold lots of melted butter and hot syrup. Doesn’t that sound delicious?

A Belgium-style waffle maker will get the job done, but the thick, fluffy waffles just aren’t the same. Now, there aren’t many waffle makers on the market that give the exact same thin round look and style as a Waffle House waffle, but there are some that are close. Take a look at the four waffle irons below to help you decide on the best American-style waffle maker for your copycat Waffle House waffles.

Copycat Waffle House Waffle Recipe

When you make these waffles, your friends and family aren’t going to believe they are homemade, they’re just that good. Before you get started, I do have a couple of tips for you so you end up with the best waffles you’ve ever made.

First, be sure you do not overmix your batter unless you want tough waffles. You should stir until everything is combined, but no further than that. Lumps are perfectly fine and to be expected.

Second, the trick to crispy waffles is a super hot waffle iron. Brush your waffle iron with melted butter or oil and make sure it’s very hot when you add the batter. If you don’t hear a sizzle when you pour the batter onto the waffle iron, it’s not ready.

Now, this is important. The final tip to get the best Waffle House waffles at home is to mix your batter the night before you plan on using it and refrigerate it overnight. Every Waffle House location does this and it truly makes a difference.

The following recipe makes roughly 6 waffles:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

  1. Stir the flour, salt, and baking soda together in a bowl and set it aside.
  2. Next, lightly beat the egg and add the butter, sugar, and shortening. Mix it well with a mixer or whisk, then mix in the remaining wet ingredients.
  3. Slowly add the wet ingredients   into the bowl of dry ingredients. Do not overmix, otherwise, you’ll have tough waffles – it’s totally fine to have a few lumps.
  4. Put the waffle batter in your hot waffle iron and cook until golden brown and crispy.

That’s it!

I hope this article enables you to get Waffle House waffles in the comfort of your own home!
