Copycat Waffle House Waffle Recipe
Alright, I know that was a lot to take in but bear with me!
We’re just getting to the good stuff – making the delicious homemade version of the waffles from Waffle House!
Before you get started, I do have a couple of tips for you so you end up with the best waffles you’ve ever made.
First, be sure you do not overmix your batter unless you want tough waffles.
Second, the trick to crispy waffles is a super hot waffle iron.
Brush your waffle iron with melted butter or oil and make sure it’s very hot when you add the batter.
If you don’t hear a sizzle when you pour the batter onto the waffle iron, it’s not ready.
Now, this is important.
The final tip to get the best Waffle House waffles at home is to mix your batter the night before you plan on using it and refrigerate it overnight.
Every Waffle House location does this and it truly makes a difference.

The following recipe makes roughly 6 waffles:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 egg
- 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- 1/2 cup half and half
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
- Stir the flour, salt, and baking soda together in a bowl and set it aside.
- Next, lightly beat the egg and add the butter, sugar, and shortening.
Mix it well with a mixer or whisk, then mix in the remaining wet ingredients.
- Slowly add the wet ingredients into the bowl of dry ingredients. Do not overmix, otherwise, you’ll have tough waffles – it’s totally fine to have a few lumps.
- Put the waffle batter in your hot waffle iron and cook until golden brown and crispy.
